Wetlands, hunting and nature preservation

This symposium, coordinated by the Forum des Marais Atlantiques, the Syndicat Mixte Baie de Somme Grand Littoral Picard, the National Hunting Federation and the Charente-Maritime and Somme Hunting Federations, will be held on the 17th, 18th and 19th June 2009 at the Maison de la Baie de Somme et de l'Oiseau in Lanchères (80).

Due to human pressure and the constant need for more space devoted to agriculture and urbanisation, wetlands keep disappearing, the remaining ones being submitted to various natural and human constraints. Wetland actors such as hunters, nature preservation organisations and scientists, in spite of their sometimes divergent viewpoints and activities, unanimously wish to protect these areas and ensure their durability.

During this symposium, more than 30 speakers will describe French wetlands, their utility for water birds and the role played by hunters in their preservation. Management examples will be detailed and used as a basis for discussions and proposals in view of the elaboration of a guidebook of measures intended to improve the current situation of various wetlands.

On the third day, field trips will allow participants to discover the ornithological interest of the Baie de Somme wetlands as well as the various hunting practices which locally contribute to the preservation of major water bird sites.
